We recently got a new mattress for our bedroom (this one—it’s on sale right now too), which officially means that everyone in the house, including the occasional guest, is sleeping on an Avocado Green Mattress. I thought we had a good mattress before, but this has been a major upgrade.
This photo is in Ozzie’s room, and I’d highly recommend getting your toddler a comfortable full-sized mattress (he has the eco organic kids mattress, also on sale!) that you’d happily fall asleep in as well.
We spend more time in bed than almost anywhere else. If you’re sleeping 7-8 hours a night, that’s about 1/3 of your life. A good mattress will impact a couple of core areas of your health. First (and perhaps the least surprising) is the quality of your sleep; sleep is paramount to just about every function in the body, including our cognitive and mental health, energy levels, hormones, cardiovascular health, blood sugar, and more more more.
Second is your toxin exposure. Have you ever thought about what you are sleeping on?! Avocado Green Mattresses are made without polyurethane foams, off-gassing adhesives, or toxic flame retardants that can be absorbed through the skin and reach our bloodstream. Instead, they use premium, organic materials that are both durable and safe.
Okay, aside from a ridiculously comfortable, non-toxic, organic mattress, here are some of my sleep must-haves:
Magnesium
Magnesium plays a role in numerous (think 300+) functions in the body, including sleep. Most of us are deficient in this essential mineral (I would blame poor soil health and stress, which depletes us of magnesium) and appropriate supplementation can help with sleep quality, falling asleep, and staying asleep. My favorites are Livon Labs Magnesium L-Threonate, Moon Juice’s Magnesium (discount code: MIA), and good ol’ epson salts which can be absorbed topically.
Sleep Mask
I cannot sleep without my sleep mask. This is the one I use (and love!), but I just saw that Lunya now has a weighted one, which I might need to get!
Pajamas
Cozy pajamas are a must! I got a fancy pair of PJs for Christmas, but when I saw they couldn’t go in the dryer, I replaced them with these from J Crew and I love them. You can even get them monogrammed.
A Zen Vibe
A peaceful, calm setting is essential for good sleep. I love Open’s sleep meditations (my link gets you a free month!), Osea’s vagus nerve pillow mist, and the Loftie Alarm Clock, which has many useful features like white noise, guide breathwork, and even some fun meditations for kids.
Today’s email has been brought to you by my friends at Avocado Green Mattress. Check out their Organic Sleep Sale and save up to $800 on one of their signature non-toxic mattresses (sale ends 3/18).
The Lunya sleep mask was a game changer as was my Loftie alarm clock because it helped support me getting my cell phone out of my bedroom. I have a Q about magnesium: I take pure encapsulations magnesium glycate daily usually in the evening (I had blood testing done and this was recommended by my doc), would taking the moon juice as a before bed drink be overkill or are they different types of magnesium?
