Mia this was so thoughtfully written and super useful. I didn’t realise half the things! Love the silicon reusable bags - haven’t seen those before. Do but you wash all your fruit and veg before using / storing too? Also if you - or anyone else - has a British water filter recommendation would be so interested ! X

Sometimes I'll wash things before storing, but not always! Look for a water filter in glass or stainless steel. I'm sure there's something available in the UK.

Super appreciate all of these tips! I got a Berkey a few years ago and have been obsessed with it. Have been slowly working on turning our home products over to safer/healthier long term alternatives. Always appreciate having recs to guide that transition!

Love the Berkey!! And I think that's the best approach. It's overwhelming to attempt to do it all at once. I've been doing the same and keep learning more and more. I'll try to share as I go x

Mia, This is soooo helpful; thank you! We live in Lake Tahoe and sadly, our water is treated such that it tastes icky if it sits for more than a minute. I have an Aarke which I love to make bubbly water but I'm realizing the water that I drink from the bottles made from tap water here tastes great even if it sits a while. Does the Aarke filter, too??

So happy this is helpful, Leslie. :) I have the Aarke carbonator too. Love it! The filter is different though. I like the Aarke filter because it's a carafe that you can easily have at your desk or the dinner table, but the Berkey is bigger so is better for larger households, filling the coffee pot, etc.

I will purchase that; thank you!

We have a cottage in Northern Ontario and have to bring our water in. We have been using water cooler and large plastic bottles but I am looking for an alternative. Well is not an option and lake water tastes fishy even with great filters. Any ideas?
