Happy August! We’re in peak summer, which happens to be my absolute favorite time of the year (and the only season where I like tomatoes). My love of vibrant summer flavors and impromptu outdoor hangs will be on full display for the next few weeks.
Despite our collective love of summer, many of my clients over the past week have been expressing a little summer exhaustion. If the travel, erratic childcare/camp schedules, extra meals out, ice cream runs and the wine (oh the wine) are starting to take their toll, I’d recommend committing to a week (or two) of food journaling. I mentioned this in Friday’s email in relation to snacks and protein intake (50+ high protein snacks, in case you missed it!), but food tracking is a great way to bring awareness back to your food choices. Here are some ways to track:
Pen to paper: Either in your phone notes, a notebook, or The Well Journal (my first book!).
Use an app: Like My Fitness Pal or Chronometer. This will give you macros so you can track your protein, etc.
Get a continuous glucose monitor: A CGM will encourage you to log your meal and understand how your food choices affect your blood sugar. I use Levels (this link gets you a deal).
Mindless eating is easy when you’re out of your regular routine, so don’t panic if your food journals bring to light some habits you’re not proud of. This is your opportunity to switch gears. If you have questions or thoughts, put them in the chat or comment section below.
WHAT I’M LOVING RIGHT NOW
Before we get into this week’s menu, just a couple of summer things I’ve been into lately:
Sun protection:
Sunscreen & a hat
At this point you might have a good bronze going, but we can’t let our sun protection gaurd down. I’ve been using Attitude sunscreen all summer and I love it (safe for the whole family). I also just got this cute hat which I will be wearing on repeat until daylight savings hits.
My favorite swimsuit on sale:
Hunza G
I have been wearing Hunza G swimsuits almost exclusively for the past five years. I got my first one when I was pregnant with Ozzie and have been amassing a collection ever since. Perfect for everyone, but their one-size-fits-all fabric is especially great for women in their childbearing phase. Shopbop is currently having a huge sale, which includes some really cute styles like this one and this one at 30% off.
And don’t forget: book club is Friday, August 16th at 9:30am PT. We’re reading Forever Strong by Dr. Gabrielle Lyon. If you weren’t prioritizing your protein before, you will after reading this book!
I’ll be sending out a zoom link to paid subscribers next week. If you’re not a paid subscriber and want to join in on the conversation, you can upgrade your subscription here:
Okay, let’s cook!
MENU | WEEK OF AUGUST 4TH
We’re having my dream dinner tonight (pictured up top): pan-roasted halibut with a summer peach salsa, and herbed cauliflower brown rice pilaf. This was inspired by a recipe my assistant Phoebe posted (a newly minted nutritionist and great follow, btw).
