I love being a mom and celebrating motherhood, but to me a motherly figure doesn’t need to be limited to the person who gave birth to you. I had dinner with some friends earlier this week and we were talking about how special it is for children to have maternal figures who aren’t their moms. I was lucky to grow up with many, and I’m really grateful to all the women (mothers, aunts, and friends) who love on my kids.
So if you’re looking for something special for a mother figure in your life or want to *hint hint* to your husband, here are some ideas:
Something thoughtful
The best gifts are not the most expensive, they’re the most thoughtful. Maybe it’s doing something she would normally do, like meal prep (all the menus from past weeks are here) or cooking a nice dinner for two (Spiced Tomato & Shrimp Bisque from Foodwise, perhaps?).
Not free, but also thoughtful: a regular delivery of flowers. Check with your local florist to see if you can get seasonal blooms delivered weekly or monthly. If you’re in LA, Flamingo Estate has an amazing weekly bloom bundle. What. A. Great. Gift.
Something to savor
Nothing says “I appreciate you” more than an indulgent treat that isn’t terrible for you. Something artisanal like Spring & Mulberry chocolate or perhaps a bottle of Ghia Original Aperitif with a set of Sophie Lou Jacobson glassware (oh yea, I really like that one!).
For a non-edible delight, a fancy candle, some bath goodies, and a get-out-of-bedtime-free card is welcome respite for moms with young children. Carrière Frères makes beautiful organic and sustainable candles that your mom would love, but for something really *extra* a Loewe candle is second to none (but also a little ridiculous). Osea Malibu makes wonderful bath products, like this calming Vagus Nerve Bath Oil and Gigartina Therapy Bath, a mineral-rich seaweed soak that foams—a bubble bath for grown ups.
Something relaxing
No one will say no to a spa day, but book it at a hotel with a pool and sweeten the deal by coordinating with her best friend’s significant other so they can go together. My parenting motto is Happy Mom, Happy Baby, and this is a happy freaking day.
At-home spa action is also welcome. A Higher Dose sauna blanket or red light face mask never disappoints and is currently on sale—use the code DOSEMOM for 20% off between now and May 2.
And all moms need a nice robe. The best robe (in my humble opinion) is the sweatshirt robe from The Great. I wear this every morning and evening, and I love love love it. Another favorite is this robe from Parachute, which I actually gave to my mom for Mother’s day one year.
Something sentimental
The kids! They get big so quick. I want to just bottle them up as they are right now and keep them like this forever. A good (not cheesy) family photo shoot is the next best thing to freezing time. Plus, if you need something for grandparents, framed family photos are always a hit. If you’re in LA, my friend Olivia Gerami does beautiful family photography. Tell her I sent you ;).
Something blingy
Obviously we saved the best for last. Because what mom doesn’t want a little bling to commemorate giving birth to her favorite people? I’ve got my eye on Adina Reyter. I love the chains, bead party necklaces, which can be customized with birthstones, initials, and other symbols of sentiment, and this darling strand of pearls that won’t break the bank. Send love to all the mamas, grandmas, aunties, best friends, neighbors, and teachers. We love and appreciate you xx
