With Father’s day around the corner I thought I would take a moment to discuss healthy habits for men. I don’t mean to over generalize here, because there are a lot of men who are into nutrition and health, but most of what I hear from my female clients (and friends) is that they struggle to get their boyfriend, husband, dad, etc. on board with healthy dietary and lifestyle changes. Also there’s the fact that women drive 70-80% of all consumer purchasing, which also aligns almost precisely with the demographic of this Substack. What that tells me is that if you don’t buy it for them, they likely won’t get it for themselves (unless you’re one of the guys reading this — in that case, bravo!).
This isn’t to rag on the men in our life, it’s because we love them. Once you’ve gone down the rabbit hole and start avoiding processed foods, using nontoxic products, etc., it’s hard to not be concerned. So, with this in mind, here are some things for the guys. I’ll admit that some of these make better Father’s Day gifts than others, but really what’s better than the gift of health (wink)?
For the guy that uses your beauty products:
Jackfir
Until recently, Jamie was using my skincare/body products, which I didn’t think much of until I learned about this incredible clean-certified men’s skincare line. The founder, Charlie, started Jackfir during treatment for Leukemia, which he was told by his doctors was the result of genetics and exposure to environmental toxins. This inspired him to take a deeper look at the products he used and start Jackfir. His clean skincare line includes a shaving cream, eye cream, cleanser, and moisturizer. It’s excellent—highly recommend. I got The Facekit for Jamie. They’re currently having a Father’s Day sale — 25% off all products with the code POPS25 (until 6/16). Extra bonus is that I get my products back!
For the guy that likes to cook:
Cooking tools, beef, and beer.
If you have a culinary-inclined man in your life, treat them to some great grill accessories like a great pair of tongs or kitchen scissors from Material Kitchen (use the code MIA15 for a discount), or perhaps, a Big Green Egg. Another idea: something healthy to go on the grill, like a grass-fed beef subscription from Butcher Box or Buy Ranch Direct, and perhaps an organic beer to drink while grilling. I once heard someone call beer glyphosate water (wheat is heavily sprayed with pesticides) and I’ve never been able to think of a cold beer in the same way again. Gahhh.
For all the guys:
Needed Dad Vitamins
It may come as no surprise that women are more likely to take supplements than men. This is certainly not because women need them more. I love Needed’s male-focused supplement line for fertility and overall heath. Feel free to use my practitioner code (MIA20) for a discount.
For the guy who wants to move more:
Something fun to keep them young.
Maybe it’s personal training sessions, a TRX, a cool pair of hiking boots (only in 11.5 but there are also a ton of these on The Real Real), or something fun like a ping pong table—great for a little after dinner glucose flush.
For guy that like to look at the numbers:
Data-driven tools.
I find that my male clients are often (not always, but often) more motivated by data and thrive off numerical results. I am a huge fan of Levels for metabolic health (use this link for 2 months free!) and a DEXA scan, which measures your body composition (muscle v. fat v. bone density) not just weight. A DEXA scan might be the worst Father’s day gift of all time, but I’m throwing it out there anyways because it’s a great tool (I’m actually getting one later today…more on this soon!).
